This was inspired by Dr. Daniel Brown’s “Embracing Grace: Settling the Guilt that Unsettles You” where he talked about the “Great Escape.” And was further fueled by this weekends Resurrection Celebration!!
We are inundated by movies about cheating or escaping death… But it seems that death always catches up with everyone. Not so fun to always be worried about death around every corner like the characters in the Final Destination movies.
We can look else where and see stunt artists or magicians “escaping death.” And yet many of them are dead now, like Evil Knievel or Houdini.
I’m not referring to physical death (because that’s inevitable for us). No, I’m referring to spiritual death. Much of the fear of death, besides some of the agonizing paths that can lead to it, is the fear of the unknown or the thought that death is it for us. I’m sure I haven’t covered all parts of it but I hope you get my gist. Death instills fear into all of us….
The death I speak of is when we physically die that we will be eternally separated from God with no chance of ever being with Him, experiencing His love, His grace…etc. Due to sin we are all set on a course of this eternal separation from God.
This weekend we celebrated The Greatest Escape. This doesn’t rival the best of stunt artists it blows them out of the water. Nothing compares to what Jesus did on the cross. He made the ultimate sacrifice, took our place on the cross, dying for OUR sins. He died an agonizing, cruel, can’t stomach kind of death…so that we didn’t have to. (You might say so how can you defeat death by dying…there’s more!)
This wasn’t an illusion. Christ paid the price for our sins. Defeated death. And death lost its hold on us. All we need to do is believe, and we can experience this Resurrection Power in our lives. Freedom from Sin and Death!!! We to can “escape death.”
