: a dark shape that appears on a surface when someone or something moves between the surface and a source of light
: an area of darkness created when a source of light is blocked
: a very small amount of something
Lately, I’ve been struck by the interesting phenomenon that are shadows. They appear as an object prevents light from passing through it. They are ever changing and fleeting. For the most part (with the exception of shade during a sun scorched day or refuge in the shadow of Gods wings, etc) they have a negative or mysterious connotation. Shadows that light casts of an object are only an outline of the real thing, no color, no details…
Shadows also exist in life as well. We say things like: she is a shadow of herself, shadow of things to come…do you ever wonder if the life you are living now is only a shadow of what it’s supposed to be?
The other day I was reflecting on a passage of scripture from Matthew 11:25-30, and it began to shed light on how much I have been chasing shadows, because I had allowed the busyness of life to cloud my way. I was experiencing life only as the shadow of what it could be.
For thousands of years God had been revealing himself to select people, many times He spoke in riddles or words that required seeking to find the hide. Answers, Or maybe man had gotten so caught up in knowledge and intellect, the he lost site of the simple things, of who God is.
Children speak without thinking. Children don’t have the years of experience clouding their way. They have faith. They simply trust and believe. Where have we lost this?
Jesus has now opened the way for us to know the mysteries and hidden things of God. Just by coming to him, an open invitation for us to know Jesus and in return know the Father.
It’s in His rest where we learn and are equipped to live the journey of life, yoked with Christ. No more heavy burdens. Jesus’ gentleness and love calls out to us to come, rest, and spend s lifetime learning and experiencing the hidden mysteries of God. This includes the unique purpose of my life and those around me. No more chasing shadows: shadows of who God is, shadows of who I am, but allowing God to shed light and reveal things afresh and anew.
God I feel as though I’m the wise person here, trying to satisfy the longing within by acquiring more knowledge, opportunities to share this knowledge, and some how keep myself busy enough to fill what seems like empty space. Just to feel as though I’ve accomplished something with my life.
Many times I seem to try and fit you in when, “I’ve got the time.” I’ve gotten so caught up in these things, but I’ve got it all wrong. Forgive me for placing these things in front of you. I keep making excuses, that if I accomplished certain things, then I would stop and spend time with you.
That’s never what you wanted, these things I chase are but shadows compared to the vivd color of a life that starts by seeking You first. You say, “Come all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest.” It’s an ah ha moment…I wasn’t meant to carry these burdens.
It’s in the place of rest where I can off load these burdens I carry, and trade them for a yoke that is easy and light. It’s light because we are yoked together. Here I can experience life in abundance, clarity and fruitfulness. Not in a shadow or silhouette of what life could be.
It’s here in this rest where I can become like a child, begin to learn, and am equipped for the call of God on my life. In this place I can learn to more effectively live out life because it’s out of an overflow of the work of God in me because I chose to COME.
Thank you Lord for loving me enough to have established a way for me to be reconciled to you. You have given glimpses from the beginning of time. You promised to send your Son, and you did. You sent your Son to pay the price for our sins so that we could be reconciled and have a relationship with you. The way it was meant to be, walking hand in hand through life together with God.
All I (we) have to do is COME…
I am your Light.
My word is a lamp unto your feet.
I shed light on and reveal the true identity of the things you hold onto.
I shine light through the shadows and you will see that nothing but my light remains.
It’s in the light of my light that you can truly see and experience the abundant life I have for you.
Stop holding onto mere shadows for they will not fulfill you. Let go and come into the light.
Your time with me will equip you to live as my light fills you, surrounds you, and lights the way before you.
I don’t want our relationship to be like an emergency flashlight, placed in that secret place where you’ll remember when you need it…but you forget where it is.
I want to be your constant light within and out of you at all moments, whether you sleep or every waking moment.
I am Immanuel. God with you. Your ever present Light.
I desire and resolve to stop chasing shadows, to no longer place the things of the world before My Light, My Jesus. For its in Him, that I live, move and have my being.
The journey away from chasing shadows will not be easy, I don’t expect it to be perfect, but I all I want is to walk along life’s journey side by side with Jesus. I’ve tasted and I’ve seen, no better place to be!
